COVID-19 Practice Update

March 29, 2020

Covid-19 Practice Update: Smith & Co Naturopathic Medicine is still open to support your ongoing health for face to face consultations and prescription pick-ups, with the option of online or phone consultations. If you have an upcoming appointment with me I will be in touch to confirm your preferred way to chat.

Coronavirus has entered our collective psyche and made uncertainty a familiar feeling. Our resilience and adaptability is being challenged and with all crises comes opportunity for kindness and compassion. This virus has brought acute health care to the fore but the majority of my work with patients is for ongoing, sometimes chronic health conditions. Your continuous support is still the priority of my practice so please do not hesitate to contact me for any ongoing needs. If you are struggling with anxiety or are concerned about your immunity and would like acute care, do not hesitate to get in touch. I can post you out anything you need. The clinic uses express post and provided Australia Post can keep up (they’re working extra hard) you should get your prescription the next day. At this stage, reception and dispensary are still open for pre-ordered pick-ups.

In the meantime, here are a few hopefully helpful resources to keep you company and/or empower you in the coming weeks/months…

Are you looking for information on Coronavirus you can trust? Dr Norman Swan who hosts the excellent Radio National program ‘The Health Report’ has created another ABC podcast called ‘Coronacast’ set up to answer all kinds of questions from the public and give a daily update of COVID-19 information.

Ginger is an incredible herbal ally. I have taken this recipe directly from the sage (excuse the pun) herbalist Stephen Buhner and a fascinating interview he did back in 2015. If you’re keen to understand how viruses work and interact with the environment, this is a fabulous interview

Here is an adaptation of his recipe to bolster immunity:

Juice 300g of fresh ginger. Place the pulp in the fridge to use in curries and stir fry’s. Pour the juice into a jar or bottle. This becomes your herbal ‘stock’ (should make approx. 150mL)

Take 5 -10mL of ginger stock and add to 100mL of hot water. Add the juice of ½ a lime, ½ tsp of unprocessed honey and a dash of cayenne pepper. Sip and make as often as you need.

Coronavirus may confine us — but we can learn to explore in very different ways.

Alain de Botton writes in the Financial Times about how to travel from your sofa.

I am loving Matt Haig’s Instagram feed …“Routines are everything. Getting out of bed when you don’t have to. Having a shower. Getting dressed. Eating regularly. Replacing the gym with a home workout. Doing whatever else you can do when you can do it. When reality knocks us, routine gives us the structure to absorb it”

Lastly and most importantly, I hope that you and your families and friends stay healthy.

Sam
